<text>Diachylon was originally a kind of medicament made of the juices of several plants also named diachylum or diaculum, but now commonly the name for lead plaster, (emplastrum plumbi)—a plaster made of lead oxide boiled together with olive oil and water. It is applied to sheets of linen, and works as an adhesive plaster when heated. In the 18th Century working class people used pills of it to procure abortion, in effect caused by lead poisoning. Another example of how the more affluent can slowly kill themselves.

Consumption is the old name for the disease tuberculosis. There is nothing quite like Spirit of Vitriol which is concentrated Sulphuric Acid when used as a medicine. Spirit of Sulphur is also Sulphuric Acid. The editor loves these views of the gentry trying to kill themselves once again even if the stuff may have been neutralised by apples. The idea of concentrated Sulphuric Acid floating around a kitchen is a bit scary. It would disolve the marble motar quite effectively however.

Hart's horn refers to the horns of the male red deer. Shavings from the horns and hooves of the deer were processed into "spirits,"
As above and associated with Sal volatile or smelling salts a solution of ammonia used as a detergent or in medicine. The usual active compound is ammonium carbonate</text>

It was stitched together with cotton to form a binding of some sort.

The two other folios are somewhat separate but form a whole with being kept together. It is difficult to tell which is the front cover or the rear one.

The owner has decided to call "Gravy Soup" as the front page because it is cleaner and "Rheumatism", the rear one, because it has a stain that suggests it was laid down on something wet.

The page edges are cleaner where they may have been exposed. That seems a good reason enough.

With the 28 leaves in the folio, half way through it was turned upside down and started to be written from the other end.

We have taken a great delight in dealing with this folio and addressing contemporary medical thinking. In many ways, with knowledge behind it, quite alarming.

We will begin with gravy and end up with rheumatism, so enjoy the journey.</text>

In the meantime Thomas Starkie, Rector of Blackburn, was watching the expansion of the textile industry, the developing Industrial Revolution, and his parish church was falling to pieces. From 1780 his parishioners were involved in ongoing industrial disputes with the cotton mill owners that would last a century.

The old church was pulled down in 1820.The tower remained until about 1870.

Elsewhere on this site the narrative of Thomas Thursby in the mid 18th Century shows how slowly their mindset altered.

Wealth and status offered little protection from disease and death. Their medicines offered little more than another way of dying.

                <text>
The metal pin illustrated was once the only way, that did not involve cutting and folding, to join items of paper together. Staples and paper clips did not exist.

Pins and Needles were made in water powered mills in a difficult process to produce quality products. Until the patenting of a fully mechanised process in around 1824 they were very expensive.

The wire the pins were made from was drawn through metal dyes according to the thickness required and cut to length. Each item had to be sharpened by hand and a neck made at the other end.

Children, who had small hands, were employed to wind fine wire around the neck to make the head, which was cut and soldered into place. The product was tinned using molten metal and then placed into drums to tumble them smooth and to polish them.

Putting the items into folded paper packages was a manufacturing process that came later. Prior to that they were sold by item or weight.
